My Story

SRE Battersea Half Marathon

Social value forms a central part of the SRE’s commitments to the Southern region throughout CP7 and CP8, and providing support to local charities is key to this. To help deliver on these commitments, members of the SRE will be running the Battersea Half Marathon on Saturday 11th May 2024 in aid of Sal’s Shoes, a Kent-based charity.

The half marathon team is growing quickly, with the ambition to involve people from across all five SID business partners, as well as the wider SRE network. The team are of mixed running abilities, many of whom are new to running and have never completed a long-distance race before. A half marathon is a significant undertaking, so the team will be starting their training in earnest in the New Year.

Social Value Benefits

Sal’s Shoes are a small charity based in Edenbridge, Kent. They collect and then donate outgrown children’s shoes to countries around the world where children lack the luxury of an adequate pair of shoes. In many cases this lack of proper footwear leads to injury and infection, especially in areas with poor sanitation.

Founded 10 years ago by CJ Bowry, Sal’s Shoes send outgrown children’s shoes collected in the UK to the most disadvantaged countries around the world. In 10 years, Sal’s Shoes have donated over five million pairs of shoes to 61 countries around the world, finding new feet for shoes that would have otherwise been discarded. Their work is also expanding within the UK, with the School Shoes Fund supporting parents in getting their children a new pair of school shoes, the need for which is ever increasing.

Unlike large multinational charities, Sal’s Shoes are a small charity that have a direct impact with its small team of volunteers. This means that donations raised as part of the SRE Hackney Half Marathon event will go further in helping children most in need.

A Note from the Team:

Thank you to everyone who is supporting us in our SRE half marathon. If you are able to donate, it would be hugely appreciated and go an incredibly long way to helping the SRE team meet our ambitious fundraising target.

Many thanks,

Ben, Rosie, Connor, Matt, Mick, Jack, Muhammad, John, Ed, Ella, Ian, Joshua, Adam, Tom, Denis, MAndy, Nick, Kirk, Charlotte, Dan
